Introducing DonkeyTree: Explore Nearly 57,000 Donkey Pedigrees, Bloodlines, and History
If you’ve spent any amount of time around donkeys, you’ve probably noticed something special about the people who love them.
Donkey owners are passionate. They treasure family bloodlines, old photographs, registration records, and the stories that connect one generation of donkeys to the next. Yet for many years, much of that history has been scattered across filing cabinets, registration papers, personal websites, and photo albums.
That’s why I’m excited to share that DonkeyTree is back—and better than ever.
What Is DonkeyTree?
DonkeyTree is a free online database dedicated to preserving and exploring donkey pedigrees, bloodlines, photographs, and historical records.
The project contains information on nearly 57,000 donkeys representing breeds and bloodlines from across the United States and around the world.
Whether you’re researching a beloved miniature donkey, tracing the ancestry of an American Mammoth Jackstock, or simply curious about the history behind a particular animal, DonkeyTree provides a place where that information can be preserved and shared.
Our goal is simple:
Help ensure that donkey history is not lost.

A Legacy Worth Preserving
Many longtime donkey enthusiasts may remember the original DonkeyTree project created by Pat Scanlan.
Pat dedicated countless hours to collecting and preserving pedigree information for the donkey community. His work became an invaluable resource for breeders, owners, researchers, and donkey lovers everywhere.
Some years ago, I was honored to become the steward of that legacy.
As someone who has spent much of my life around donkeys—particularly American Mammoth Jackstock donkeys—I immediately recognized how important this information is. Pedigrees tell a story. They help us understand bloodlines, preserve breed history, and celebrate the animals that helped shape today’s donkey population.
The challenge was that technology has changed dramatically since DonkeyTree first began.
The site needed a modern foundation that could serve today’s donkey community while preserving the incredible work that had already been done.
What’s New?
The new DonkeyTree has been completely rebuilt from the ground up.

Interactive Pedigrees
One of my favorite features is the ability to explore family trees and bloodlines.
You can move through generations of ancestry and discover connections that may have otherwise remained hidden.
Photos and Historical Records
Many donkey owners have photos, registration documents, and historical information tucked away in boxes or albums.
DonkeyTree helps preserve those records digitally for future generations.
Fun Facts and Statistics
For data lovers, the site includes interesting statistics and insights about the donkeys recorded within the database.
You might be surprised by some of the trends hidden within decades of pedigree information.
Why It Matters
It’s easy to think of a pedigree as simply a list of names. In reality, every name represents an animal that mattered to someone. Behind every donkey is a story. A family that loved them. A breeder who worked to improve a bloodline. A child who learned responsibility. A show competitor. A trail companion. A driving partner. A trusted friend.
When those stories disappear, a piece of our shared history disappears with them.
Preserving that information helps future generations understand where today’s donkeys came from and appreciate the people who helped build the breeds we enjoy today.
How You Can Help
One of the most exciting parts of the new DonkeyTree is that the community can help it grow.
If you own donkeys, I encourage you to:
- Search for your donkeys
- Verify existing information
- Upload photos
- Add missing records
- Share family histories
- Invite friends and breeders to participate
The more complete the information becomes, the more valuable the resource becomes for everyone.
Always Free
One thing that will never change is the mission. DonkeyTree was built for the donkey community.
The database remains freely accessible to donkey owners, breeders, researchers, and enthusiasts who want to learn more about these incredible animals.
Preserving history should be something everyone can participate in.
